McDonald's has pulled a holiday commercial created with AI following receiving significant criticism on social media.

The short ad was created with the help of AI video tools and was first published on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Audience Response and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, commenters denounced the implementation of AI in the film. Several labeled it "uncanny" and "poorly edited".

"This moment serves as an valuable learning as we investigate the effective use of AI," commented a representative from the company.

The advert was produced for McDonald's by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It showed a series of things that often go badly during the festive season, under the tagline "not the most wonderful time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI Commercials

Campaigns that include generative AI have become a growing phenomenon among large brands, notably for the holiday period.

  • Another beverage giant has recently launched consecutive AI-created Christmas commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: Because clips made using generative AI are more likely to distort the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be about six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked fears about automation in the creative industry, with some commenters stating it might affect opportunities for camera crews.

Response from the Creators

Following the commercial being pulled, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.

She stated, the production process required "over a month and a half" and involved creating "thousands of takes" which were then shaped in post-production "just as we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't just an AI gimmick," she commented. "We consider it a film."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's ad was largely panned, the response for other AI-generated campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created holiday ad from another major brand reportedly achieved a 61% "favorable response" from online commenters.

However, various brands have also received scrutiny for employing AI in advertising. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that some described as "cheap" and "uncanny".

The episode highlights the ongoing debate within the marketing and creative industries about the trade-off between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
