Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the ability to challenge specific rulings from the official, mirroring the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
